Welcome to Ternyata.org, Elizabeth Pisani’s home space. “Ternyata” is an Indonesian word which signals an unexpected discovery, a surprising finding, a curious explanation
The combination of curiosity, discovery and explanation embodied by Ternyata is the bedrock of both of Elizabeth’s careers so far – journalism and epidemiology (for more background and a full c.v., click here).

Elizabeth's new book, The Wisdom of Whores, is in bookstores in the UK, Europe, Asia and North America now. The Dutch language edition (called Sex, Drugs...& AIDS) is also on sale now. If you're interested in the book or want to contact Elizabeth about it, you'd probably be better off on the The Wisdom of Whores site.
You can read reviews of the book and profiles of Elizabeth, listen to radio discussions and watch a (pretty tough) TV interview here. She's also giving talks around and about the place, in Europe and north America. If you want to join the discussion, check out upcoming events.

If you couldn't be at the launch, you can read a funny account of it over on Notes from the Slushpile Click here to see a video about the book. And here to see one which explains why more sex can mean less HIV.
Another way to contribute thoughts and comments is to go to Elizabeth's blog on the subject of science, sex and other things that interest her. You'll find it on
http://www.wisdomofwhores.com., or click "Blog" in the navigation bar to take you there.

As a journalist and foreign correspondent, from the mid 1980s to the mid-1990s, she covered everything from business and financial markets to politics and rebellion, with a leavening of travel and culture features. For examples of Elizabeth’s writing, click here.
The skills of investigative journalism – a nose for the unexpected, an ability to ask the right questions of the right people and formulate the responses into a coherent explanation of the situation – are very similar to those of epidemiology; Elizabeth crossed the barrier in the mid-1990s and has for a decade contributed to understanding the evolution of the HIV epidemic worldwide.
